Master of Arts in Hispanic Theology and Ministry

Master of Arts in Hispanic Theology and Ministry
(36 credit-hours)

Designed to form ministers for religious leadership in the U.S. Catholic Church, with its majority Latino/a population, this degree provides foundational instruction in Hispanic religious heritage, Latino/a biblical hermeneutics, and Latino/a theologies. The program provides supervised experiences in Latino/a ministry or, for students already engaged in Hispanic ministry, opportunities to critically reflect on their pastoral skills.

Distance Learning Option

Up to twelve credit-hours may be earned entirely online. Other courses may be offered in the blended format of both on-site and online coursework.

Educational goals and outcomes for students

  • The capacity to recognize the complexity of the US Hispanic experience of the church
  • Initial integration of theologies arising from US Latino/a contexts with pastoral experiences
  • The ability to engage in theological reflection as teología y pastoral en conjunto
  • The capacity to respond pastorally in particular Latino/a cultural/religious contexts

All applicants should have an undergraduate degree or its equivalent.

Participation in appropriate spiritual formation program.

Degree-Specific Admissions Requirements

  1. Three letters of recommendation from persons who can attest to the applicant’s suitability for graduate study and ministry. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the Admissions Office. Note: Applicants from participating religious communities need to provide a letter from the community affirming their support to pursue this degree.
  2. Official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended by the applicant. Transcripts are to be sent by the Registrars of these schools directly to the Admissions Office.
  3. Undergraduate background in theology and/or philosophy is recommended.
  4. Three years of experience in communicating religious values to others.
